As the days are getting shorter and colder, the need for cosy nights in grows. And what is more essential to those nights in front of the fireplace, under a blanket, than hot chocolate?! Now I am a big fan of hot chocolate as it is, but every now and then, it’s nice to change things up a bit. Today, I have for you a couple of hot chocolates with a twist!
COOKIES & CREAM HOT CHOCOLATE
- What you’ll need for 1 cup:
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 bag of homemade or store-bought hot chocolate mix
- 4 oreos
- Whipped cream (optional)
Start by heating up the milk in a small saucepan. Crush the oreos in a blender, until it’s almost powder-like. Make sure there are no big chunks in it anymore. Mix the crushed oreos with the chocolate mix. Add in a little bit of the warmed up milk with the chocolate oreo mixture, to prevent from getting lumps in your hot chocolate. Then add in the rest of the milk and stir it all together. Top it off with some whipped cream and sprinkle some crushed oreos on top! Et voilà, a cookies and cream hot chocolate! And obviously, you have to have to oreos on the side to dip.
SALTED CARAMEL HOT CHOCOLATE
- What you’ll need for 1 cup:
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 bag of homemade or store-bought hot chocolate mix
- 1/4 cup caster sugar
- 2,5 tbsp. butter
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- Pinch of salt
- Whipped cream (optional)
Start by melting the butter in a small pan. When this is melted add in the sugar, cream and a pinch of salt. Heat this up to a boil. Be very careful with this because caramel gets REALLY hot. Let it boil for a couple of minutes, until the sugar is fully melted. Then pour into a can to let it cool for a bit. In the meantime, heat up the milk. Then mix the hot chocolate mix with a sip of the milk, and stir in the salted caramel (just as much as you like). Then stir in the rest of the milk, and top it off with some whipped cream, caramel sauce and seasalt. I’m telling you, this salted caramel hot chocolate is just as good as the Starbucks’ one!
PEPPERMINT HOT CHOCOLATE
- What you’ll need for 1 cup:
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 bag of homemade or store-bought hot chocolate mix
- 3 candy canes (peppermint flavoured)
- Whipped cream and mini marshmallow (optional)
Start by heating up the milk. Then place 2 of the candy canes in a blender and crush them into powder. Combine this powder with the hot chocolate mix. Then stir in a bit of the warm milk with the peppermint hot chocolate mix to avoid lumps. And finally, add in the rest of the milk, and top it off with some whipped cream, mini marshmallows and a candy cane!
And there you have it, three slightly different takes on a classic hot chocolate! I hope you try them out for yourself! Let me know what your favourite way to drink your hot chocolate is!
